This map is one in a series of vegetation maps produced by the University of California, Riverside Center for Conservation Biology (UCR CCB) for the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan. UCR CCB created a finescale vegetation map of the Dos Palmas Conservation Area (Reserve Management Unit 4 under the Plan) that covers approximately 25,800 acres in the Coachella Valley of Riverside County, California. This map and report were prepared for the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (MSHCP) under contract with the Coachella Valley Conservation Commission (CVCC). The primary purpose was to develop a dynamic and accurate vegetation map for the Dos Palmas Conservation Area, so that it may be applied to future conservation efforts, and assist with management of the 27 species and 27 natural communities listed within the Plan. This unit is the third major part of the ongoing initiative to map vegetation in all conservation units within the Plan area. The Dos Palmas Conservation Area final vegetation map and report were completed in 2016. Fieldwork, photo-interpretation and mapping were performed from 2015-2016. One hundred nintety-one reconnaissance vegetation assessment plots were conducted within the study area, in addition to one hundred thirty-two rapid observations of vegetation at pre-determined points. Photo-interpretation of 2013 imagery and field information were combined to produce delineations of vegetation alliances and associations according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife classification system, outlined in the Manual of California Vegetation Second Edition (Sawyer et al. 2009). Thus, the current version of the map best represents the status of vegetation in 2013. In 2017-2019, UCR CCB was tasked with correcting the 2014 map, for attributes and geography, and creating a 2018 map update. The same imagery and plot information was used, but attributes and geometry were corrected, addittional attributes for cover and disturbance were added to the original map. The vegetation type feature now comprise 1257 polygons. The Rapid Assessment point feature class was also corrected for errors. The mapping boundary was not altered. The 2018 map used 2018 aerial imagery as a basis for delineation and attribution.
This map and related report describe the 2018 vegetation map covering the approximately 25,800 acres that comprise the Dos Palmas Conservation Area.
The original vegetation map described above was prepared for publication in CDFW's Biogeographic Information and Observation System (BIOS) by the Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program (VegCAMP).
