The California Department of Fish and Wildlife mapped the locations of individuals or clusters of the invasive non-native plant rattlebox, also known as red sesbania or scarlet wisteria (Sesbania punicea), along the Sacramento River from Red Bluff to Verona between July, 2016 and June, 2018. Data for Redding to Red Bluff were collected and contributed by the California Department of Water Resources. Mapping took place from a boat waypoints corresponding to approximate locations of rattlebox plants or groups of rattlebox plants were marked on a handheld global positioning system (GPS) unit. These points should be accurate to roughly 50 m of the true plant location along the riverbank. The waypoints show the position of the boat; the side of the river on which the infestation was seen was also recorded.
Mapping the infestation of Sesbania punicea along the middle Sacramento River was the first step of a project to remove rattlebox in the Sacramento River ecosystem. This project is funded by a State Wildlife Grant, administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
