Currently, there are 444 estuaries present in this layer, with attributes describing the presence of eelgrass in each estuary.

Description

The Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership (PMEP), is a nationally recognized partnership that seeks to advance regional and national goals relating to fish habitat. PMEP is a consortium of organizations focused on West Coast fish habitat in the region's estuaries and nearshore marine waters.

This layer represents estuaries, as points, in the Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnerships (PMEP) spatial data system. Currently, there are 444 estuaries present in this layer, with attributes describing the presence of eelgrass in each estuary.

Data clipped to the state of California with a 5 mile buffer by CDFW staff ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PMEPs efforts to inventory and clasify the estuaries of the contiguous United States West Coast built upon An Inventory and Classification of U.S. West Coast Estuaries (Heady et al 2014). This effort developed a comprehensive inventory of U.S. West Coast estuaries by tallying 691 coastal confluences for Washington, Oregon and California. This report also applied the physiographic setting of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) to these estuaries. This initial list of estuaries was then reduced to 303 estuaries for the foundational report Nursery Functions of U.S. West Coast Estuaries: The State of Knowledge for Juveniles of Focal Invertebrate and Fish Species (Hughes et al 2014), based on a decision tree to limit the estuaries to those that likely support nursery habitat for West Coast marine and anadromous species. From this list of 303 estuaries, PMEP conducted an internal process to refine the list of estuaries. This process included subdividing areas of the Salish Sea (previously grouped into 7 estuary subbasins) into individual estuaries (n=166), removing certain estuaries (usually based on limited potential to provide current or future fish habitat), subdividing larger estuaries, merging estuaries together, and adding a limited number of estuaries. The area with the most change in this process was the Salish Sea region. PMEP utilized the technical report from the Puget Sound Nearshore Ecosystem Restoration Project (PSNERP) titled 2012-01 Strategies for Nearshore Protection and Restoration in Puget Sound in an effort to include all high potential sites identified in Appendix B of the report in the list of Salish Sea estuaries. Nearly 150 estuaries in the Salish Sea PMEP ecoregion were identified and explicitly included in PMEPs mapping products by cross-referencing the PSNERP technical report's high-potential sites. The current number of PMEP estuaries is 444.
