Eyes on the Lake (EOL) is a volunteer, citizen science program led by the League to Save Lake Tahoe, in partnership with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, as well as other organizations that make up the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program. The two main targets of the Eyes on the Lake program are Eurasian watermilfoil and curlyleaf pondweed. Both are already established in many locations throughout Lake Tahoe and are difficult and expensive to control. These aquatic invasive plants cause clarity loss, harm native species, and pose a significant threat to the ecology of the Lake. The Aquatic Invasive Plants in Lake Tahoe (2013-2017) map utilizes Eyes on the Lake data collected from 2013-2017 and data published in the University of Nevada, Reno's (UNR) Implementation Plan for the Control of Aquatic Invasive Species within Lake Tahoe. The map also includes other layers based off information collected from other partner agencies throughout the Tahoe Basin.
This dataset was created to provide data on locations of the aquatic invasive plants Eurasian watermilfoil and curlyleaf pondweed to non-profits and government agencies working to address aquatic invasive species in the Lake Tahoe Basin, so that any new infestations of these plants can be identified and addressed quickly before they are able to spread to other parts of the Lake.
