Summary

This dataset was produced to facilitate regional planning, conservation, and enhancement of biological resources by state agencies, project partners and regional stakeholders.

Description

Geodatabase feature class containing a map of vegetation within the Great Valley Ecoregion produced by the Geographical Information Center (GIC) at CSU Chico. The dataset combines both new mapping and the previously completed Central Valley Riparian and Sacramento Valley and the Southern San Joaquin Valley vegetation maps. Vegetation polygons were manually digitized as interpreted using the National Agricultural Inventory Programs (NAIP) 2009 (Central Valley Riparian and Sacramento Valley map), 2012 (Southern San Joaquin Valley map) and 2014 (balance of San Joaquin Valley) aerial imagery at a scale of 1:2000. The minimum mapping unit (mmu) for natural vegetation is 1.0 acre, with a minimum average width of 10 meters. The mmu for agricultural and urban polygons is 10 acres. Vegetation is attributed to the Group and Alliance level of the state and national vegetation hierarchy. In some cases, polygons were attributed only to Group or Macrogroup level when the Alliance could not be determined from photointerpretation. The map classification is based on the key to vegetation types in Buck-Diaz et al. 2012. The Central Valley and Sacramento Valley maps were assessed for Accuracy with an average users accuracy of 90.2% and users accuracy of 89%. The San Joaquin Valley portion of the map was field verified by the mappers but was not otherwise assessed for accuracy (see Supplemental Information below for details).

Supplemental information
Vegetation polygons were manually digitized as interpreted using the National Agricultural Inventory Program's 2009, 2012 and 2014 (NAIP) aerial imagery at a scale of 1:2000. 2012. * The MapClass Schoenoplectus (acutus, californicus) is a mapping unit which includes two separate alliances which are within two separate groups. To retain the finest level of detail we crosswalked everything that was mapped to this mapping unit to the Schoenoplectus californicusSchoenoplectus acutus association in Schoenoplectus californicus alliance. Mapping standards are the same as are specified in Fine-Scale Riparian Vegetation Mapping of the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan Area (CDFW and GIC 2013) and are summarized here. Please refer to that document for more information. Polygons are attributed with absolute percent cover of hardwood tree, conifer tree, total tree, and shrub life forms in 1% increments. Herb cover is attributed in one of five cover classes. Cover of all of the life forms were estimated using "Birdseye Total Cover" i.e., what can be seen on the aerial photo excluding understory layers when covered by an overstory layer. Cover estimates consider the porosity of the canopy (i.e., holes in the canopies of individual trees or shrubs). Tree type alliances were mapped when trees were >5% of the polygon. If there was a change in canopy overstory density or size class within the same alliance, the polygon was segregated if it was >5 acres. If the understory layer cover changed but the alliance remained the same, the polygon was segregated if it was >10 acres. Shrub vegetation alliances were mapped when tree cover was <5%, and the shrub cover was >10%. The percent of absolute shrub cover was estimated taking into account the porosity of the shrub layer. Heterotheca oregona, Allenrolfea occidentalis, Suaeda moquinii, Atriplex lentiformis, and Frankenia salina are the exceptions to this rule and are classified as shrub types with cover as low as 2%. Due to the difficulty of determining the presence of diagnostic native herbaceous species in grasslands of the Great Valley ecoregion, only those polygons that were definitively assessed based on field visits for map accuracy assessment, classification, or reconnaissance are labeled with CFG California Annual Forbs and Grasses or CPG California Perennial Grassland. All other herbaceous polygons are identified to the macrogroup level: California Annual and Perennial Grassland (M045 California Annual & Perennial Grassland). This macrogroup includes native and non-native ruderal herbaceous vegetation. To further refine those macrogroup labels requires additional field work that thoroughly inventories the polygons within a period where the native herbaceous component is identifiable (e.g., not during a prolonged drought or during a time of year where native species presence cannot be ascertained). IMPORTANT: Users should be aware that polygons labeled to this macrogroup may contain native grasslands or other herbaceous types, which may be considered rare, and should be visited in the field to ascertain the rarity or nativity of vegetation within the polygon. Central Valley Riparian and Sacramento Valley Vegetation Map This vegetation dataset combines mapping in the western Sacramento Valley with maps produced previously by the Department of Water Resources Central Valley Flood Protection Program's System-wide Planning Area (floodplains along the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers and major tributaries) and of the eastern Sacramento Valley. Mapping was completed from interpretation of the National Agricultural Inventory Program's 2009 (NAIP 2009) aerial imagery. The combined DWR and SGC mapping area was assessed for accuracy by VegCAMP. Overall users accuracy of the map was 88% and producers was 87%, thus exceeding the Federal Geographic Data Committees standard for such maps of 80%. Accuracy of the western Sacramento Valley portion of the map was not conducted but is assumed to be similar to the rest of the map given the same classification, imagery, and photointerpreters were used. More information on the classification can be found here: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=64011. More information on the mapping procedures and standards and the accuracy assessment methods and results can be found here: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=74420. Southern San Joaquin Valley Geodatabase feature class containing a map of vegetation of portions of the Southern San Joaquin Valley using the National Vegetation Classification System and Survey of California Vegetation standards produced by the Geographical Information Center (GIC) at CSU Chico. Vegetation polygons were manually digitized as interpreted using the National Agricultural Inventory Program's 2012 or 2014 aerial imagery at a scale of 1:2000 (year of imagery is an attribute). A total of 772 (6%) of the polygons were viewed in the field by the mappers. Due to funding limitations, accuracy of this entire map was not tested but is assumed to be consistent with the 88% users and 87% producers accuracy of the map of the Sacramento Valley based on the same classification and mapping standards produced by GIC. Overview Description
Entity and Attribute Overview
Note: certain fields have been added by the Department of Fish and Game's Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program. These include crosswalks to the Wildlife Habitat Relationships and CalVeg classification systems, Global and State Ranks, CaCode and the fields relating the mapping units to the National Vegetation Classification System as it is described for California in the 2nd edition of the Manual of California Vegetation. The original Great Valley Ecoregion vegetation map completed by GIC extended beyond the boundary of the Great Valley Ecoregion and incorporated the Proposed Tehachapi Pass High Speed Rail Corridor vegetation map (ds1328). The final map was clipped to the Great Valley Ecoregion boundary and the portion of the Tehachapi map that fell outside of the Great Valley Ecoregion was removed. The original attributes and cover values were retained for polygons that had been split as a result of the removal of the Tehachapi map.
