The primary goal of this project was to collect up-to-date information on historical trends, current socioeconomic conditions, and the spatial distribution and economic value of key commercial fisheries and the commercial passenger fishing vessel fleet in the Central Coast Region.


This data set is a part of Ecotrust's project entitled: Establishing a Baseline and Assessing Spatial and Socioeconomic Change in the California Central Coast Commercial and CPFV Fisheries. This project is a component of the California Central Coast Marine Protected Area Baseline Monitoring Project that is designed to characterize the ecological and socioeconomic conditions and changes within the Central Coast Region since MPA implementation. The Central Coast study region extends from the north at Pigeon Point to the south at Point Conception. This data set consists of data collected in the spring of 2012 from fisheries mapping interviews with commercial fishermen who had Nearshore finfish-live--hook and line landings in the California Central Coast in 2011. Results from the interviews were then combined through an aggregation process where the value each fisherman gives to their Nearshore finfish-live fishing grounds are weighted by their landings for Nearshore finfish-live in 2011. This data set represents the spatial extent and relative value of Nearshore finfish-live commercial fishing grounds for the Central Coast Region in the year 2011.

Measure description
Data was derived from interviews with fishermen and each fisherman gave boundaries to their fishing grounds and the value attributed to those grounds. Not all fishermen have the same method for describing their fishing areas, so there is variability in the results. Some fishermen would give very detailed areas and other fishermen would give less detailed areas.

All data is overlaid on NOAA nautical charts, with all layers sharing the same projection.


Process step
Ecotrust staff edits the fishing ground data to the specific area(s) that the fisherman described, using north and south boundaries, depth ranges, or other geographic details.

Ecotrust staff interviews individual fishermen, collecting data on their fishing grounds, fishing history, and value of fishing grounds.

For each fisherman in a particular fishery, these raster grids are added one on top of another and the total value of each cell is calculated, resulting in a combined raster dataset, showing the value of a particular fishery for all participating fishermen using the values they placed on their grounds and their landings.

Data are combined through a calculation where the value of a fisherman's particular fishing ground (number of pennies out of 100) is combined with their landings for that fishery and divided by the area of that particular fishing ground.

Each fisherman's grounds are converted from a vector to a raster using the value determined in the previous step, with the result being a dollar value for each raster grid cell.

Commercial fishery datasets are created for each of the fishery/port combinations that had 3 or more fishermen participate in the interview process.

Quality control to check that penny value equals 100 for each fishery that the fisherman participates in and that the fishery shapes are correct.

The cell values in the combined raster are multiplied by 100,000 to give each cell a relative value that is easier to interpret.
