This dataset is intended to provide GIS users with data for creating maps that depict the ESU/DPS boundary as well as the historical structure of the population. The data are based on the most recent species description found in agency regulations and published in the Federal Register. The polygons illustrate the location and extent of freshwater spawning areas occupied currently (the ESU/DPS boundary) or historically. However, these data DO NOT constitute a legal boundary or definition for this DPS. These data are based on the most recent species description found in agency regulations at 50 CFR 17.11, 50 CFR 223.102, and 50 CFR 224.101. This dataset depicts the general boundaries of the Southern OR & Northern CA Coastal Chinook Salmon evolutionarily significant unit (ESU) (i.e., a distinct population segment (DPS) under the U.S. Endangered Species Act) as well as the historical population structure of the species. These boundaries represent the freshwater spawning areas occupied currently and historically. Only the areas coded as Accessible (in attribute "Class") constitute the defined ESU/DPS boundary.

Please review the attribute data and process steps to determine appropriate depiction and item reference. This data is as correct and up-to-date, from the publication date, as possible according to the Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) 6 boundaries. It should be noted that the boundaries shown include both the areas of the watersheds that are accessible and anthropogenically blocked, however the ESU/DPS boundaries are defined as only the areas that are accessible to the fish populations. Species do not necessarily inhabit all drainages or river reaches depicted. Constraints from the source data: These data should not be used at scales greater than 1:24,000 for the purpose of identifying hydrographic watershed boundary feature locations in the U.S.A. Photographic or digital enlargement of these maps to scales greater than that at which they were originally delineated can result in misrepresentation of the data. If enlarged, the maps will not include the fine detail that would be appropriate for mapping at the small scale.
