Summary

This dataset represents locations that have been stocked with fish by CDFW during the current year and the two preceeding years. It was created to provide a spatial representation of release waters described in the CDFWs statewide hatchery database. This spatial representation will make fish stocking information more accessible both to Department staff and to other interested parties and could be utilized as a tool by hatcheries to enhance fish stocking planning and efficiency.

Description

This dataset represents locations that have been stocked with fish by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife during the current year and the two preceeding years. Each feature in this dataset represents a California Department of Fish and Wildlife hatcherys inland program fish stocking release water as described in the California Department of Fish and Wildlifes statewide hatchery database. Release water is defined as surface water where fish stocking took place. A single release water may be a moving water such as a portion of a stream or river, or a non-moving water such as a lake, reservoir, or pond. Note that there may be multiple fish planting sites on a designated water during a stocking event but these individual sites are not represented in this dataset.

Measure description
Moving waters polygons were developed by indexing waters locations to National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) High Resolution routed linework and buffering the resulting linear events at 10 meters for segments and the resulting point events at 20 meters for waters represented by a single release site. Non-moving water polygons were exported from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Ca_Lakes dataset and attributed with that dateset's unique lake identifier.

Measure description
The completeness of this spatial data reflects the content of the sources, which are the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) High Resolution NHDinGeo product for moving waters polygons and California Department of Fish and Wildlife Ca_Lakes dataset for non-moving waters polygons. The detection of source errors by viewers of this data that have effected the spatial representation of these waters should be directed to the attention of the developer of this dataset.

CDFW release event attributes reflect attributes contained in CDFW Statewide Hatchery Database. Detected errors in these attributes should be directed to the attention of the developer of this dataset.

Evaluation method
Coded domain values described in the attribute portion of the metadata reflect all domain values present in the CDFW Statewide Hatchery Database. Not all of these domain values are represented in this version of the spatial dataset thus queries on the spatial dataset using unrepresented domain values will return empty results. Some domain values related to Anadromous fish releases remain undefined at this date but are not applicable to Inland Program fish releases.

Measure description
From NHD metadata: "Statements of horizontal positional accuracy are based on accuracy statements made for U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle maps. These maps were compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. For horizontal accuracy, this standard is met if at least 90 percent of points tested are within 0.02 inch (at map scale) of the true position. Additional offsets to positions may have been introduced where feature density is high to improve the legibility of map symbols. In addition, the digitizing of maps is estimated to contain a horizontal positional error of less than or equal to 0.003 inch standard error (at map scale) in the two component directions relative to the source maps. Visual comparison between the map graphic (including digital scans of the graphic) and plots or digital displays of points, lines, and areas, is used as control to assess the positional accuracy of digital data. Digital map elements along the adjoining edges of data sets are aligned if they are within a 0.02 inch tolerance (at map scale). Features with like dimensionality (for example, features that all are delineated with lines), with or without like characteristics, that are within the tolerance are aligned by moving the features equally to a common point. Features outside the tolerance are not moved; instead, a feature of type connector is added to join the features." From Ca_Lakes metadata: "Multiple source data generally captured from scanned 7.5 minute USGS quads, which contain accuracies of +- 40 feet combined with additional inaccuracies of each raster dataset (DRGs). Some polygons are known to be greater than 40 foot accuracy. This statement is generally true for the most common sources of NHD data. Other sources and methods may have been used to create or update NHD data. In some cases, additional information may be found in the NHDMetadata table."
