Summary

Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers the importance of these areas to the conservation of this species. It does not afford any special protection or restriction other than where federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.

Description

These data identify the areas (in general) where critical habitat for Braunton's milk-vetch occurs. Critical habitat for the species consists of approximately 3,300 acres among six units distributed in three general areas: eastern Ventura County, east-central Los Angeles County, and northeastern Orange County, California.

Use limitations

The GIS files and their associated coordinates are not to be used as a legal source for determining the critical habitat boundaries of the species. Inherent in any data set used to develop graphical representations, are limitations of accuracy as determined by, among others, the source, scale and resolution of the data. While the Service makes every effort to represent the critical habitat shown with this data as completely and accurately as possible (given existing time and resource constraints), the USFWS gives no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of these data. In addition, the USFWS shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein. Graphical representations provided by the use of this data do not represent a legal description of the critical habitat boundary. The user is referred to the critical habitat textual description in the appropriate final rule for this species as published in the Federal Register. Please check sources, scale, accuracy, currentness and other available information. Please confirm that you are using the most recent copy of both data and metadata. Acknowledgement of the USFWS would be appreciated.

Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
Polygon boundaries reflect the areas identified by biologists as described in the Federal Register.

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
Topologically clean. Polygon ties end to end to completely enclose the area. No duplicate features exist nor duplicate points in a data string. All nodes are prepresented by a single coordinate pair which indicates the beginning or end of a line segment.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
Data attributes follow the US Fish and Wildlife Service Critical Habitat Spatial Data Specifications. These data contain a subset of the USFWS standard attributes as selected by the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office based on the number and spatial conformation of the included polygons. Attribute accuracy was inspected manually but no automated tests were performed.

Evaluation method
Visually inspected to insure all attributes are present and appropriately populated.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
Polygon item values were checked by the analyst against source materials for omissions and correctness.

Evaluation method
Not tested

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension vertical

Measure description
A formal accuracy assessment of the vertical positional information in the data set has either not been conducted, or is not applicable.

Lineage

Process step
When the process occurred 2006-01-01
Description
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists identified critical habitat areas by using spatial data layers acquired from the State of California Natural Heritage Program's Natural Diversity Data Base, USDA's National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP), and plant occurence data from private individuals. In order to define when patches were within a single population and include areas likely to support a seed bank, we conducted a nearest neighbor analysis using all available mapped occurrences. We determined the distance from the centroid of each mapped occurrence or patch to the centroid of the nearest mapped occurrence. The average distance between patch centroids within populations was 935 ft (285 m). To encompass contiguous areas of adjacent habitat that is likely to contain a seed bank we then buffered the mapped occurrence polygons by 285 meters. Polygons created by this method were connected if they were within 1,968 feet (600 m) based upon minimum flight distance data for insect pollenators of the species. The resulting polygons were edited manually to remove existing development, roads, landscaping, or other areas unlikely to contain the primary constituent elements of critical habitat. This editing step was accomplished by overlaying the initial polgyon boundaries on aerial imagery (NAIP, 2005). Edited polyon boundaries were modified in ArcMap with the "generalize" command (2 meter maximum allowable offset) to decrease the number of vertices defining a polygon boundary. The x,y coordinate pairs defining the vertices of the "generalized" polygons were further edited by rounding to whole meter values.
