Summary

This data set was developed as part of the California Department of Water Resource's Central Valley Flood Protection Program and to facilitate regional planning, conservation and enhancement of biological resources by the Department of Water Resources, project partners and regional stakeholders.

Description

Geodatabase (SDE) feature class containing map of vegetation along mainstem rivers and major tributaries (including ancillary natural and semi-natural vegetation) found within the Department of Water Resources Central Valley Flood Protection Program's Systemwide Planning Area (SPA). This map includes vegetation outside of the SPA within Great Valley Ecoregion (GVE) of the Central Valley from the King's River drainage north to the town of Red Bluff and vegetation above the GVE along the mainstem of the Sacramento River to Keswick Dam. Data was modified based on Accuracy Assessment feedback from the CA DFG in August 2011. Data was originally developed from June 2010 through April 2011 from interpretation of the National Agicultural Inventory Program's 2009 (NAIP 2009) aerial imagery and hand-digitized at a minimum mapping unit (mmu) of 1.0-acres with a minimum average width of 10-meters per polygon. Medium-scale vegetation categories were based on the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS) "group-level" as interpreted in Appendix 3 (pp. 1227-1240) of the Manual of California Vegetation, 2nd Ed. (Sawer et.al. 2009). "Medium-scale" thus refers to the mid-level thematic resolution for vegetation used for the map. This medium-scale mapping effort incorporated provisional group categories where no clear relationship between vegetation types and NVCS groups existed.

For the portion of the dataset excluding the Delta as previously mapped: Map accuracy is detailed in the report, "Accuracy Assessment of Mid-scale Central Valley Riparian Vegetation Map," Produced for the Central Valley Flood Protection Program, California Department of Water Resources by the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG). Overall producer's accuracy of the polygons assessed was 79% and overall user's accuracy was 76%, with accuracy ranging from 0 to 100% for the various map classes. Since the state accuracy standard for vegetation maps is 80%, this map almost met, but did not meet, the standard. A contingency table and a discussion of the map units that did not meet the 80% expectation are in the Accuracy Assessment report. This report is not yet available to the public.

Measure description
Polygons were delineated using heads-up digitizing at a scale of 1:2000 via ArcGIS onto National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) 2009 imagery flown at a one meter GSD and rectified to the national standards at 1:24,000. The minimum mapping unit (MMU) for natural vegetation is 1-acre with average width > 10-meters. Allowances for MMU rules were made for important or obvious types, such as in-stream islands or gravel bars. Forested vegetation (> 5% tree cover) was also mapped (i.e. divided) to MMUs of 1-acre with average width > 10-meters based on categorical tree height (see Additional mapping rules, below). Shrub vegetation types (< 5% tree cover and >10% shrub cover) were broken into separate cover classes when shrub-type vegetation polygons were > 5-acres. The MMU for agricultural and urban areas classified at Anderson Level I was 10-acres with an average 10-meter minimum width. Roads less than the MMU were included in other types or split between polygons that abut the road. Canopy of vegetation over water was digitized following canopy line (as opposed to estimating water to estimated bankline under canopy).
