Summary

Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers the importance of these areas to the conservation of this species. It does not afford any special protection or restriction other than where federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.

Description

These data identify the areas (in general) of critical habitat designated for the tidewater goby on February 6, 2013 (78FR8746). These data reflect revisions to the final rule published in the Federal Register on January 31, 2008 (73FR5920). Critical habitat for the species consists of approximately 12,000 acres from San Diego County northward to Del Norte County, California.

Lineage

Process step
Description
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists used spatial data layers acquired from the State of California Natural Heritage Program's Natural Diversity Data Base, USDA's National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP), the Service's National Wetlands Inventory, and speicies occurence data from private individuals and our records. Occupied streams were selected for inclusion in critical habitat based upon the history of occupancy of the stream, size of the population, and known/potential threats. Critical habitat polygons were digitized based upon specific knowledge of occupied habitat or built by aggregating polygons depicting specific NWI wetland types under the following general headings: intertidal marine (rivermouth), estuarine, and tidally influenced palustrine/riverine. For units based on NWI polygons, the upstream extents of critical habitat were drawn at either 3.1 river-miles from the ocean, passage barriers, steep gradient, or where permanent stream flow deminishes to intermittent flow.
