The intersection of the range maps with fine-scale hexagon cells allows for a rapid query of any portion of the state for the presence of a number of species. The resulting table lists the common and scientific names of all species within a taxonomic group whose ranges intersect the selected area.
This data set is an intersection of 694 vector polygon ranges in the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) System with a statewide grid of 25 square mile hexagon cells. The shapefile contains the hexagon cells and their i.d. numbers (HEX25_ID). The polygon range GIS layers used for the intersection were the same layers as those that appeared in Version 8.2 of the CWHR System software. Both the ranges and the system software have since been updated and are available for download from our CWHR web page at https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Data/CWHR
The hexagon analysis is being rerun with the newly updated ranges and will replace the currently available hexagon layers as soon as they are complete. The individual range layers are also available through our BIOS Map Viewer https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Data/BIOS
