Summary

The intersection of the range maps with fine-scale hexagon cells allows for a rapid query of any portion of the state for the presence of a number of species. The resulting table lists the common and scientific names of all species within a taxonomic group whose ranges intersect the selected area.

Description

This data set is an intersection of 694 vector polygon ranges in the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) System with a statewide grid of 25 square mile hexagon cells. The shapefile contains the hexagon cells and their i.d. numbers (HEX25_ID). The polygon range GIS layers used for the intersection were the same layers as those that appeared in Version 8.2 of the CWHR System software. Both the ranges and the system software have since been updated and are available for download from our CWHR web page at https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Data/CWHR

The hexagon analysis is being rerun with the newly updated ranges and will replace the currently available hexagon layers as soon as they are complete. The individual range layers are also available through our BIOS Map Viewer https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Data/BIOS

Supplemental information
Vector datasets representing species' ranges are one component of CWHR, a comprehensive information system and predictive model for California's wildlife. The CWHR System was developed to support habitat conservation and management, land use planning, impact assessment, education, and research involving terrestrial vertebrates in California. CWHR contains information on life history, management status, geographic distribution, and habitat relationships for 694 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals known to occur regularly in the state. Range maps represent the maximum, current geographic extent of each species within California. They were originally delineated at a scale of 1:5,000,000 by species-level experts and have gradually been revised at a scale of 1:1,000,000.
