The primary goal of this project was to collect up-to-date baseline information on the spatial use patterns, economic expenditures, site use preference, MPA awareness, and demographic characteristics of the California North Central Coast recreational red abalone fishery.
This data set is a part of Ecotrusts larger effort to establish a baseline and monitoring the impact of marine protected area on human use patterns in the California North Central Coast. The title of the report associated with this data set is entitled: California North Central Coast Recreational Red Abalone Fishery: Establishing a Spatial and Economic Baseline Data Set for Long Term MPA Monitoring. This project is a component of the California North Central Coast Marine Protected Area Baseline Monitoring Project that is designed to characterize the ecological and socioeconomic conditions and changes within the North Central Coast Region since MPA implementation. The Central Coast study region extends from the north at Alder Creek to the south at Pigeon Point. This data set consists of data collected in the spring of 2011 from phone interviews with a random sample of recreational abalone harvesters who had purchased an abalone permit/punch card with the California Department of Fish and Game during 2007 to 2009. Results from the interviews were then combined through an aggregation process where the value each fisherman gave to their abalone harvest grounds are weighted by the number of days they visited that area in 2010. To combine spatial data sets for each punch card site into a regional data set each punch card site was then weighted by the estaimted number of abalone harvested at each punch card site in 2010 from California Department of Fish and Game estimates. This data set represents the spatial extent and relative intensity of recreational abalone harvest for the North Central Coast study region in the year 2010.
