Summary

Prior to developing a Vegetation and Biodiversity Management Plan, MCOSD determined that a vegetation classification and map of their lands was necessary to characterize existing floristic resources. Results the classification and this vegetation map (AIS 2008) will help inform a variety of resource management tasks including sensitive species and habitat protection, trail and road maintenance, wildfire risk reduction, Sudden Oak Death mitigation, and compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulations.

Description

This is a vegetation map of the Marin County Open Space District Lands. It was produced in 2008 by Aerial Information Systems using hi-resolution (1') natural color imagery provided by the County of Marin, acquired by Vargis (date unknown). The classification is based on the National Vegetation Classification System, and specifically supported by fieldwork done by CNPS in both the MCOSD and the Marin Municipal Water District through 2008.

No formal accuracy assessment was done, but classification surveys were compared with the call that the photointerpreter made for correspondance, and in the 250 (of 405) surveys where the call differed, AIS either changed their PI call or noted why they did not.

The presence of broom within a delineated stand of vegetation. It is important to note that the broom modifier should be considered temporal since the imagery may differ from what was actually found on the ground. The broom modifier was only used when seen on the digital imagery and was not a line former for polygons. In other words, the line work for a polygon was not based on the presence of broom.

Field description
Within the study area, Sudden Oak Death (SOD) is a disease that infects oaks or close relatives to oaks (e.g. tanoak). Since the dead trees can create a dangerous fire hazard, their presence was given a modifier. The trees most commonly affected by SOD in this study area are primarily coast live oak, and tanoak.

Field description
The fieldcheck attribute was used to notify the field crew that the photo interpreters had a question about the vegetation. A value of 1 was assigned to a polygon when the photo interpreter had a question about a polygon that needed to be checked by a field crew person. Once the question was answered, the PI code was assigned based on the field crews findings, and a value of 2 was given to the field attribute in the polygon. A value of 6 was given to polygons that the field crew deemed inaccessible due to the terrain.

Entity and Attribute Overview Note: certain fields have been added by the Department of Fish and Wildlife's Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program. These include crosswalks to the Wildlife Habitat Relationships and CalVeg classification systems, Global and State Ranks, CaCode and the fields relating the mapping units to the National Vegetation Classification System as it is described for California in the 2nd edition of the Manual of California Vegetation. Macrogroups may differ from the original vegetation classification.
