Summary

Funded through Prop 50, this data is intended to represent a comprehensive collection of digitally available invasive plant surveys for giant reed, pampas grass, jubata grass, Mexican fan palm, and Canary Island date palm within California coastal watersheds from Salinas to Tijuana. For any given region, there can be additional high-priority species inventoried. This California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC) mapping project is part of a larger statewide effort through CDFA, DFG, and the Cal-IPC to compile and integrate invasive plant data into a statewide database.

Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
No tests for logical consistency were conducted.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
Accuracy of the attribute PERC_COVER has yet to be determined. Percentages were based on a rough visual interpretation from the ground. In some cases, values may be moderately under or over-estimated because of issues with access to property and/or line of sight due to other vegetation cover, structures, etc. This holds true Arundo and jubata grass in particular.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
Positional accuracy may vary across the project extent due to fluctuating base imagery resolutions that were available at the time of the pre-mapping and field surveys. For those sources that used high resolution aerial photography as a base source, Data collected is no better than that of the photography used to delineate extent. Up to two methods were used for the data compilation. These include (a) in-house pre-surveys using heads-up digitizing of high resolution vertical aerial photography combined with hi-res oblique photography as reference, (b) field mapping with the use of high resolution vertical aerial photography and an integrated Tablet PC/GPS, or c) a combination of both methods (pre-mapping followed up by field checking). Cartographic offsets may be present in the data due to several conditions including (a) GPS accuracy affected by quality of unit, and/or poor signal due to canopy cover, terrain, cloud cover, time of day, etc., (b) scale and legibility constraints within basemap aerial photography, (c) field mapper interpretational errors due to line of sight issues caused by dense vegetation, terrain, structures, etc.

Quantitative test results
Value varies (~.5m-10m)

Evaluation method
This value is a rough estimate based on short qualitative data reviews of various areas using high resolution photography. No further testing was performed.

The geodatabase and relevant base information is then exported out of ArcGIS via the ArcPad toolbar. The AP toolbar automatically generates forms using the attributes we defined in our geodatabase. The project data was then copied onto one of our field tablets (Xplore ix104C2 or Xplore ix104C3).

Process step
Description
A file geodatabase was created and domains were set for the appropriate fields. Using domains helps ensure data integrity by limiting the choice of values for a particular field. Validation for coded value domains is accomplished by restricting the user to choose field values from a dropdown list.

Description
Field surveyors mapped plant populations and checked existing pre-mapping using one of the following Tablet PC/GPS units: (a) Xplore ix104c2 with bluetooth Trimble XB receiver or (b) Xplore ix104c3 with hard-mounted Xplore GPS module. Surveyors used their GPS location in conjunction with high-resolution aerial imagery within ArcPad. Tracklogs within ArcPad were used to monitor coverage area (presence/abscence) and time spent mapping each area.
