Summary

The database was designed by the Sierra District, California Department of Parks and Recreation to identify and assess aspen stands according to their priority with regard to stand loss.

Description

The database represents point locations and associated stand assessment data collected within aspen stands on lands administrated by the Sierra District, California Department of Parks and Recreation, Placer, Eldorado, Sierra and Inyo Counties, California. This data was gathered during the summer of 2005. The stands were evaluated according to their priority with regard to stand loss. The dataset has 15 aspen stands, of which six have been assessed. Field surveys were conducted by trained USFS field staff. Surveys were not complete for the watersheds, and so this is not considered a comprehensive database of aspen in the region. Aspen stands were assessed and delineated using a protocol developed by the lead investigators. Associated with this point layer is a polygon layer (SIERRA_SP_POLY) containing aspen stands delineated in conjunction with the aspen assessment information. Data Compilation: The Aspen Delineation Project (ADP) is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Region, the California Department of Fish and Games Resource Assessment Program, and the California Office of Bureau of Land Management. Principal Investigator for ADP is David Burton; visit: www.aspensite.org for more information regarding the ADP. The Department of Fish and Games, Resource Assessment Program compiled this information from the collaborating agencies and other researchers, and formatted the data into a common database for the purpose of facilitating access to data related to the conservation of Quaking Aspen in California. This information portal falls within the ADP goals to help agencies and land managers identify, map, treat, and monitor aspen habitats. This dataset is a portion of a master database compiled during a year long effort in 2005 to pull together current GIS layers and maps depicting Aspen communities in California.

Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
Known caveats of the data: Caveats include: 1) the accuracy of the points representing the stand are limited by the quality of the GPS unit (2) Polygons layers were created using limited # of points, field notes, and maps. The field crews collected data using a waypoint method. In this case the waypoint creates simple, rectangular polygons using a set of approximately three to twenty GPS points (waypoints) collected in selected areas along the edge of the aspen stand.

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
This only a partial data set.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
Significant general assumptions of the data are: 1) the protocol produces qualitative assessment information and is limited to the protocol use. (2) GPS reading provide are for general geo-referencing and not for providing the exact boundary of any stand. Original location information was gathered using hand held GPS units using NAD 27 datum using a waypoint method. In this case the waypoint creates simple, rectangular polygons using a set of approximately three to 20 GPS points (waypoints) collected in selected areas along the edge of the aspen stand. Polygons were created by hand in a GIS merging GPS, field maps, and field notes.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
Original location information was gathered using hand held GPS units using NAD 27 datum. Polygons were created by hand in GIS merging GPS, field maps, and field notes.
