Summary

The purpose of this data set is to improve understanding of the ecology of greater white-fronted geese in California and serve as baseline data on which to impacts on white-fronted goose ecology of changes in the Central Valley landscape. These and earlier data are compared in Ackerman et al. 2006.

Description

Using radio-telemetry, greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons frontalis) distribution and movements during winter in Central California were determined during 1998-99 and 1999-2000. Accuracy of individual data fields has been reviewed. Data collection for 1998-2000 is complete although additional years may be added.

Supplemental information
METHODS: The study was organized and conducted by staff from the U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center. Geese were captured on the central Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska during late summer by herding molting geese into corral traps. Age and sex of geese was determined and adult females were radiomarked with 30-g solar transmitters attached to numbered neck collars. Geese were released at the capture site. Using telemetry systems mounted in vehicles or aircraft, the northern Central Valley was monitored for arrival of radiotagged geese. The status (location, alive, or dead) of each goose in the northern Central Valley was determined daily by truck from 1 November to 15 March and monthly by aircraft from 1 November to 15 April each year. Two bearings from known locations were obtained using a truck-mounted dual-Yagi null-peak telemetry system to minimize time between bearings and because preliminary tests showed more bearings did not increase accuracy in our flat, open study areas. Goose locations were calculated using a modified version of XYLOG and UTMTEL (Dodge and Steiner 1986). White-fronted geese generally fly from roosting to feeding sites each morning and evening to feed in agricultural fields, and based on our field observations, we classified locations collected during morning (0531-1030 hours) and evening (1531-2230 hours) as feeding sites and midday (1031-1530 hours) and night-time (2231-0530 hours) as roosting sites. We verified feeding and roosting locations with direct observations whenever possible. REFERENCES: Ackerman, J., J. Y. Takekawa, D. L. Orthmeyer, J. P. Fleskes, J. L Yee, and K. L. Kruse. 2006. Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
Single azimuth telemetry locations, anecdotal sightings, and incomplete spatial data are not included.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
Attributes assigned by field personnel, accuracy of attribute information subject to error in data entry or interpretation. Incidence and degree of errors presumed to be small.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
Telemetry location determined through intersection of signal bearings. Effect of error in intersection determined in part by distance to bird and angle of bearing intersection. Errors in positional locations minor but may exceed 100 meters.
