Summary

These data are intended to represent baseline data for wildlife communities and habitat conditions in these parks. They can be used to assess and monitor the park's ecological viability and sustainability.

Description

These data are detections of reptiles in 2006 under 2 ft x 2 ft dimension plywood coverboards at four of the 15 sample points at Spears and Didion Ranches, Placer County, California. There are 81 coverboards in a 9 board by 9 board array (on 15 m spacing) centered on the sample points. Coverboards were placed in oak woodland and annual grassland habitat in November-December 2006 and checked on a bi-weekly basis between March-July 2006. All 204 animals found under the coverboards were counted, identified to species, and aged and sexed.

Supplemental information
Methods Plywood coverboards of a 61 cm x 61 cm (24" x 24") dimension (1.2 cm [15/32"] thickness) were placed on a 9 station x 9 station grid (total 81 stations) on 15 m spacing (15 m x 15 m [49 ft x 49 ft] grid; 1.44 ha [3.6 ac]) at each sample point. The center of 9 x 9 grid was at station #41, which was centered at the randomly selected sample point used for point counts and other wildlife census and inventory efforts. The grid and boards were square and oriented so that the sides were N-S and E-W. The sample points were predetermined. Boards were placed at or near the grid intersection (within 5 m) in grass, leaves, bare soil, small rock scatters, rock outcrops, and/or litter so long as they were flat with the ground surface and not raised substantially above the ground level or uneven. The boards were lightly pressed into the ground to imbed them, and a hand trowel sometimes used to remove rocks, sticks, or other debris to allow the board to lie as flat as possible. Boards were unattended for 30 days to allow them to weather, and reptiles and amphibians to acclimate to them; regular checks will followed that will be made on a bi-weekly basis (approximately every 10-14 days) until early to late-May depending on weather conditions and animal use. Checks were made on alternating morning and late afternoon schedules. Reference: CDFG Resource Assessment Program's Coverboard Study Instructions. Un-dated. Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
All data are complete.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
It is assumed that the locations of the survey points are accurate with regard to the actual locations on the ground where the surveys were done. It is assumed that these species were accurately identified by vocalization and/or visually, and that they were counted accurately. Also, the spatial accuracy of the 100-m count circle radius is presumably accurate to +- 5 m because boundaries were measured with laser rangefinders and marked in the field with flagging. The accuracy of distance estimation for birds is +- 10 m, and distance estimates for vocalizing birds is less than visually detected birds.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
The boundary distance of the point count radii are accurate to +- 5 m, while the bird detections are accurate to +- 10 m.

Lineage

Process step
Description
Data were gathered in the field, entered into SYSTAT statistical software as raw field data from the counts, and then an Excel file was created with the summary statistics for detection rates and the average number of individuals per count.

The 15 points here were locations where point count surveys for birds were conducted in 2005 and 2006. Only four of the points had coverboard arays to sample reptiles and amphibians.
