Summary

These data are intended to represent baseline data for wildlife communities and habitat conditions in these parks. They can be used to assess and monitor the park's ecological viability and sustainability.

Description

These data are the number individual stems of three different types of downed woody debris (DWD), which are logs and slash, from 0.05-ha circular plot habitat samples taken in 2005 at sample points at Spears and Didion Ranches, Placer County, California. There were three 0.05-ha circular habitat sampling plots at each of the 15 sample points.

Supplemental information
Methods Logs and downed woody debris are counted using the four (4) transects centered along the N-S, NE-SW, E-W, and NW-SE axis's used for the cover and seedling/sapling tallies. (Note that these 4 transects are actually the 8 transects described in the "Habitat Sampling Protocols" referenced below. Each transect in the protocol is from the center of the plot out to the plot's circumference. The count data for the 2 transects making up the N-S axis, for example, were combined in the data table under the NUMB_TRANS field. This resulted in 8 transects being combined with their axial pair and the counts being displayed in the data as the results of 4 transects.) The entire length of each transect is sampled. Transect length depends on the plot size as with other measures. Logs and slash intersected by these transects are tallied by California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) classes for vegetation residues. Log and slash length must be > 1 m (3.3 ft) to be tallied, and diameter is measured at the greatest diameter of the log or slash. Logs intersecting multiple transects are tallied once; multiple branching logs and slash are tallied once based on the largest diameter by following branches to the trunk or largest diameter branch. Branches and slash broken off larger branches and trees are tallied as individual items. For more information on how this sampling component fits into the sampling scheme used on the Spears and Didion Ranch Parks project, see the the following documents: Garrison, B.A. May 2004. Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
All vegetation-habitat sampling occurred at 3-circular plots around each of the 15 sample points in the project area. During data compilation the coordinates of the centers of 4-plots (3-2, 11-3, 12-3, and 14-1) were lost and are not shown when this data layer is displayed. However, the attribute data for these points exist in the database and are available for analysis if the exact point is not required (Contact the Data Distributor). See the linked referenced protocols and data sheet in these metadata to evaluate the how the missing coordinates might affect any further analysis of these data. Otherwise, all data are complete.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
It is assumed that the locations of the survey points are accurate with regard to the actual locations on the ground where the surveys were done. The spatial accuracy of the 100-m count circle radius is presumably accurate to +- 5 m because boundaries were measured with laser rangefinders.
