Summary

These data are intended to represent baseline data for wildlife communities and habitat conditions in these parks. They can be used to assess and monitor the park's ecological viability and sustainability.

Description

These data are summary statistics of abundances of birds counted within 100-m radius circles with 10-minute point counts at 15 sample points within Spears and Didion Ranches, Placer County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Bird surveys were conducted 1 April to 6 June 2005 and 19 March to 23 June 2006. These data represent 539 detections of 69 species at 15 different sample points within these two ranches that are part of the Placer Legacy program.

Supplemental information
Methodology Birds were identified to species and counted in spring and summer in 2005 and 2006 within 100-m radius circular points in oak woodland habitat in Placer County. Different observers did the counts over the two years, and there were three and eight counts, respectively, in 2005 and 2006. The 15 points were randomly located throughout the study area. Observers were fully trained in the count methodology and bird identification, and all observers had hearing tests to ensure that they had normal hearing. Observers were rotated among sample points and individual counts. All birds seen and heard that were at least momentarily stationary on the ground, vegetation, or on the water, were were identified to species and included in the counts. Bird abundances were derived by averaging the number of individuals detected for the counts conducted in each year. Binoculars were used when necessary to identify species. The sample points were randomly selected from a 300-m by 300-m grid across the entire study area. Reference: Garrison, B. 3/22/2004. Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
The reported abundances represent averages from three (2005) or eight (2006) replicated counts at 15 sample points at the Spears and Didion Ranch parks in Placer County. Within each year, averages are consistent among the 15 points with regard to observers and survey effort. Only birds accurately identified to full species that were on some surface and momentarily stationary and not flying (e.g., perched, floating, walking, etc.) within the 100-m radius circle during the 10-minute counting period are reported. These observations represent detections for birds within a 100-m radius circle, and these animals are highly mobile but it is likely that these animals can be found again at the same points indicated in this file. Repeat surveys of the same areas, however, may result in different rates of detections as well as abundances of these same species. The 15 points, however, are numbered from 2 to 16 because the first of the originally 16 selected points was dropped from the surveys after the initial random selection and surveys were started.

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
All data are complete.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
It is assumed that the locations of the survey points are accurate with regard to the actual locations on the ground where the surveys were done. It is assumed that these species were accurately identified by vocalization and/or visually, and that they were counted accurately. Also, the spatial accuracy of the 100-m count circle radius is presumably accurate to +- 5 m because boundaries were measured with laser rangefinders and marked in the field with flagging. The accuracy of distance estimation for birds is +- 10 m, and distance estimates for vocalizing birds is less than visually detected birds.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
The boundary distance of the point count radii are accurate to +- 5 m, while the bird detections are accurate to +- 10 m.
