Summary

These data are intended to represent baseline data for wildlife communities and habitat conditions in these parks. They can be used to assess and monitor the park's ecological viability and sustainability.

Description

These data are the detections of Virginia rail (Rallus limicola), Sora (Porzana carolina), and California black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis) from 13 survey points at wetlands at the Spears and Didion Ranch parks in Placer County, California. These detections resulted from playback surveys at these points in April and May 2005.

Supplemental information
Methodology: The wetlands where the surveys were done were found during habitat surveys of the parks. Playback surveys were done between April 11, 2005 and May 31, 2005. Playback surveys were done at one point at the 13 wetlands using recorded calls of the target rail species that were broadcast with an MP3 player and a battery-powered speaker. Species-specific territorial calls were used to detect these rails using standardized playback and listening periods as follows: 1 minute silent pre-broadcast period; 4 one-minute broadcast periods of 30 seconds of territorial call playbacks followed by 30 seconds of silent listening; and a 1 minute silent post-listening period. Playback surveys were done during daylight hours. Because rails are secretive, the compass bearing and distance from the observer's position at the survey point for each individual that responded to the playback were measured with a compass and laser rangefinder, respectively. The location of each playback point at each wetland was recorded in the field with a handheld GPS unit. Sample points were individually selected at each wetland to maximize the effective survey area at each wetland. Also, the observers tried to determine the age of the responding individual.

Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
These detections are logically consistent because the detections represent responses of individual rails to playbacks at each wetland where the rail surveys were done. Detections of rails from the same wetlands at different dates and times may represent repeat detections of the same individual. These animals are typically resident animals that remain at these wetlands throughout the year, so it is likely but uncertain to some degree if these same animals and species will be found again at the same wetlands with return visits to the wetlands indicated in this file

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
All data are complete.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
It is assumed that determination of each species, the age of the individual, and the distance and compass bearing of each detection are accurate to + 10 m for distance and + 10 for the compass bearing. Laser rangefinders and compasses were used to estimate distances and bearings for each detection. It is assumed that the latitude and longitude locations of these points are accurate with regard to the actual location on the ground of the wetlands where the surveys were done.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
The location accuracy of the responses are estimated to be + 10 m for distance and + 10 for the compass bearing.

Lineage

Process step
Description
Distances and compass bearings were gathered with laser rangefinders and handheld compasses for each detection. Data on detections were gathered in the field, entered into SYSTAT statistical software as raw field data from the surveys, and then an Excel file was created with the same detection data. Survey points were registered in the field using global positioning system units and then uploaded to ArcView 3.2.
