Summary

The data were part of a larger study of wildlife use of riparian habitat along Sierra Nevada watercourses.

Description

These data are summary statistics of abundances of birds counted within 100-m radius circles with 10-minute point counts at multiple sample points along 36 randomly selected watercourses in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Bird surveys were conducted between 25 March 2005 and 30 June 2005 along watercourses from Butte to Calaveras counties. These data represent 2,614 detections of 94 species at 144 different sample points along the 36 watercourses.

Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
The reported abundances represent averages from 1 and 3 replicated counts at each point along each watercourse. Averages are consistent among watercourses and points with the same number of counts. Three counts each were done at 19 watercourses, while 17 watercourses had 1 count at each point. Only birds accurately identified to full species that were on some surface and not flying (e.g., perched, floating, walking, etc.) within the 100-m radius circle during the 10-minute counting period are reported. These observations represent detections for birds within a 100-m radius circle, and these animals are highly mobile but it is likely that these animals can be found again at the same points indicated in this file. Repeat surveys of the same areas, however, may result in different rates of detections as well as abundances of these same species.

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
All data are complete.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
It is assumed that the locations of the survey points are accurate with regard to the actual locations on the ground where the surveys were done. It is assumed that these species were accurately identified by vocalization and/or visually, and that they were counted accurately. Also, the spatial accuracy of the 100-m count circle radius is presumably accurate to + 5 m because boundaries were measured with laser rangefinders. The accuracy of distance estimation for birds is + 10 m, and distance estimates for vocalizing birds is less than visually detected birds.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
The boundary distance of the point count radii are accurate to +- 5 m, while the bird detections are accurate to +- 10 m.

Lineage

Process step
Description
Data were gathered in the field, entered into SYSTAT statistical software as raw field data from the counts, and then an Excel file was created with the summary statistics for detection rates and the average number of individuals per count.

Overview Description
Entity and Attribute Overview
These 144 points occur on 36 randomly selected watercourses in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California. These points were locations were point count surveys for birds and playback surveys for hawks and owls were conducted in 2005. There are 3-5 sample points along each watercourse, and the points were 500-700 m apart along each watercourse.
